India beat Australia by six runs in the fifth and final T20I of the ongoing five-match T20I series in Bengaluru on Sunday (December 3) to win the shortest format bilateral series by a margin of 4-1. After being invited to bat first at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, India rode on vice captain Shreyas Iyer’s 37-ball-53 to post a total of 160 runs on the board for the loss of eight wickets and then, in reply, hold Matthew Wade’s men for 154 runs to win the match.
For India, Mukesh Kumar picked up the highest number of three wickets, and two batters each were dismissed by Arshdeep Singh and Ravi Bishnoi. Axar Patel won the Player of the Match award in the fifth T20I for his superb all-round show. He first scored 31 runs from 21 balls to help India post a challenging total and then only conceded 14 runs in his quota of four overs to make life difficult for the opposition batters.
After the conclusion of the T20I series, during the presentation ceremony, the Player of the Series was awarded to a 23-year-old star who was on fire in the bilateral series for India. But that youngster is neither Rinku Singh nor Ruturaj Gaikwad; instead, Ravi Bishnoi was picked as the top performer of the T20I series. The 23-year-old Bishnoi finished as the leading wicket-taker in the T20I series. He played in all five matches and accounted for the dismissal of nine batters.
With 223 runs to his name in five matches, Gaikwad, who became the ninth Indian batter to score a century in T20Is, finished as the leading run-getter in the series, and Rinku also impressed everyone with his super show in the five matches he played for India. He scored 105 runs in four innings with a strike rate of 175.00 and an average of 52.50.
After the conclusion of the Australia series, India will now travel to South Africa, where they will face the hosts in three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Test matches. The first T20I between India and South Africa will take place in Durban on December 10.
