Mom-of-three ditches her family house in the city to live in a 600-square-foot SHED and run a rural homestead

  • Savannah, her husband, and her three kids left city living behind them in 2021
  • They moved onto a 26-acre property with a converted shed as their house
  • She has since insisted that the ‘simple, boring life’ is the right pace for them

A woman has revealed how she and her family made the change from a house in the city, supporting themselves with conventional day jobs, to homesteading out of a tiny shed on 26 acres of land.

Savannah, known as @thehotmesshomestead on TikTok, has chronicled her journey in making moves from city life to the countryside, where she raises ducks, geese and chickens and maintains a small side hustle selling eggs and chicks.

The mom-of-three, who lives in Texas, has not made it a secret that her husband and their three kids downgraded on the space of their living accommodations, going from an 1,800-square-foot house to a 600-square-foot shed.

Their lifestyle now revolves around the vast property surrounding the abode – giving plenty of ways to live off the land.

The mom-of-three, who lives in Texas , has not made it a secret that her husband and their three kids downgraded on the space of their living accommodations

In one TikTok, Savannah walked viewers through the pros and cons of living in the converted ‘shed house.’

‘We have absolutely every climbing structure, trampoline, play dome, sandbox you could think of because we think kids should be outside more than they are inside,’ she said, later adding they also ‘have wind chimes everywhere.’

She went on to reveal that they have a full-sized fridge and freezer, a stacked washer and dryer – but no dishwasher, ‘and I have to hand-wash every single dish.’

‘Even though it’s 600 square feet, no, it’s not unfair to our kids. They still have their decorations, the boys share room, they have plenty of toys, and they have a regular full-size twin bunk bed,’ she pointed out.

‘It is actually way harder to keep clean than the 1,800-square-foot house I had. I spend way more time cleaning this little space, because all the clutter is right in your face, all the time.

‘You have nowhere to hide it. You can’t escape it!’

‘Of course I sit on the front porch all day long like an old granny… This covered porch is essentially another room we utilize,’ she concluded.

Back in 2021, Savannah and her family been living in their 1,800-square-foot urban dwelling.

But the mom-of-three added that the family do not have a dishwasher – so she washes everything by hand

‘I was incredibly unhappy, depressed, anxious.

‘I had three babies in three years, and after the birth of the third baby, my grandfather had a stroke and had to sell his land to pay for his care,’ she recalled of how they transitioned away from their former living situation.

‘We sat down with my parents and decided we wanted to go in together and to do it,’ adding that they were able to sell their old house ‘within a month.’

In their previous situation, ‘My husband was working a 70-plus hour work week and we never saw him,’ said Savannah. ‘And I decided we needed to make a change and just go for it.’

Savannah and her husband committed to ‘live simple and frugally,’ she continued, allowing him to quit his old job.

‘He took a couple months off to build a chicken coop, decompress, just enjoy life as a family and decide what we really wanted,’ she said.

‘He ended up getting a job where he’s home at 4.30pm every day.

‘We got chickens and ducks, and I actually started a small egg business as well as selling chicks on the side,’ she continued.

‘Watching him decompress and find happiness as well as myself has just been an amazing thing to see.

‘Because we realized this life of keeping up with the Joneses and having the newer car – it just wasn’t for us. I wanted a simple, boring life. That’s what brought me happiness.

‘I wanted to teach my kids to be as self-sufficient as possible, to think freely, to do things differently,’ she further explained.

‘Because all I want to do is stay home with my babies and bake and live as frugally as possible, even though we are making literally les than half as much money as we did before.

‘I’ve truly realized money does not equal happiness. And being able to be so close to my parents and live on the same land has been amazing for my kids,’ she emphasized.
