NHL announces nominees for King Clancy Memorial Trophy

The National Hockey League unveiled its 32 nominees for the 2023-24 King Clancy Memorial Trophy on Wednesday.

Per the league, the trophy is awarded “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”

Nominations come from the respective teams, while the winner is chosen by a selection committee that consists of league commissioner Gary Bettman, along with former recipients of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and the historic NHL Foundation Player Award.

The winner will receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity (or charities) of their choice. In addition, a new aspect introduced this year is that winners will also be eligible to elect their team to receive a grant from the league, up to $20,000, to help organize a special activation related to their humanitarian cause.

The nominees will be later narrowed down to three finalists, with the winner announced at the NHL Awards this summer.

Calgary Flames captain Michael Backlund is the last player to take home the trophy for his efforts during the 2022-23 season.
