NGCP says Visayas grid to be on red alert until Wednesday night

MANILA, Philippines — The Visayas grid has been placed under red alert until Wednesday night, said the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

In an advisory, the NGCP said that the red alert started at 5 a.m. and will extend until 9 p.m.

The high alert status was caused by reduced output from Mindanao to Visayas (or the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project) after two power plants — GNPK 2 and  SMCPC U2 — tripped.

“Manual load dropping or rotational power interruptions may be implemented to protect the integrity of the power system,” it added.

By 9 p.m., NGCP said the Visayas grid will then transition to yellow alert until 10 p.m.

The NGCP made the announcement after it earlier announced that the Visayas grid will be placed under yellow alert from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A red alert status is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

Meanwhile,  a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. It does not necessarily result in a power outage.
