Mount Ruang eruption: AirAsia cancels more flights to Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Labuan

Following the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM)’s Safety Information on the Mount Ruang eruption, AirAsia has cancelled more flights to East Malaysia as well as Brunei. The situation has been recognised as a serious threat to aircraft safety and airline passengers.

AirAsia flights to Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Labuan are cancelled until 8am tomorrow

As a safety precaution, AirAsia is cancelling flights to and from nine airports including Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching and Brunei effective 10am on 18th April 2024 until 8am on 19th April 2024.

According to the low-cost carrier, they are committed to prioritising safety during this time and have notified all guests affected by the cancellation. Guests who are travelling to/from affected destinations are encouraged to check their registered email and mobile phones for cancellation notifications.

All guests travelling to affected areas can check their latest flight status on AirAsia’s website.

AirAsia passengers can move flights or opt for a Credit Account

AirAsia Aviation Group CEO Bo Lingam said, “We understand that this may cause inconvenience to our guests and we apologise for the disruption to their travel plans. However, the safety of our guests and crew is paramount and we appreciate our guests’ understanding and cooperation during this time. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with relevant authorities including CAAM to assess the conditions for resuming operations to affected destinations. We are dedicating all senior executives and resources on ground to ensure the safety of our guests and aircraft amidst these circumstances, and we thank all of our guests for their continued support and patience during this time.”

Similar to the previous announcement, affected guests can choose to either move their flight to a new travel date (same route) within 30 days from the original departure date without additional cost, subject to seat availability. Alternatively, they can opt for Credit Account to retain the value of their flight booking in their AirAsia Rewards member account for future travel with AirAsia. The credit can be redeemed within 730 calendar days (2 years) from the issuance date.
