MORE young traders have been given the opportunity to set up stalls at Klang’s Bazaar Juadah Ramadan.
Klang mayor Datin Paduka Noraini Roslan said the majority of traders who applied for licences were in their late 20s or mid-30s.
“On seeing their age, we approved the trading licences.
“Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) feels that starting a food stall is ideal for young entrepreneurs to gain some business experience without a significant investment,” she said.
Noraini added that the city council was eager to encourage youths to run food stalls as an initial step towards owning a restaurant.
She said the increase in the number of traders this year would boost Klang’s economic activities.
“Last year, we had 971 traders at 41 locations but this year, there are 1,110 traders in 39 locations,” she said.
She said MBDK did not approve applications to set up Bazaar Juadah at two locations – Bandar Puteri and Jalan Pandamaran Jaya 99 – due to objections from locals about traffic congestion.
She said MBDK offered 1,731 lots for Bazaar Juadah but only 1,110 lots had been taken up.
“We still have 621 lots available.”
The various Bazaar Juadah in Klang operate from 3pm to 8pm, until April 9.
Meanwhile, MBDK Health director Azmi Muji said the city council prohibited traders from using polystyrene clam shells and cups but encouraged environment-friendly containers.
He added that health inspectors would carry out checks to ensure traders used aprons, caps and maintained good hygiene.
Noraini also advised the public to bring tiffin carriers or food and drink containers for takeaways to reduce the amount of rubbish generated.
At Bazaar Perayaan Jalan Taiping, outside Shaw Centrepoint, traders are occupying 340 lots selling traditional Malay clothes, cakes, biscuits and lifestyle products.
The bazaar, which started on March 14, ends on the eve of Hari Raya.
Sixty-eight shops fronting Jalan Taiping have also taken trading lots to promote their wares.
Noraini said MBDK aimed to promote the Bazaar Perayaan to domestic and foreign visitors.
“Bazaar Perayaan and Bazaar Juadah attract locals from all walks of life.
“Foreigners are equally impressed and fascinated with the variety of food and drinks as well as the array of goods at these bazaars.
“We need to promote the bazaars aggressively,” she said.
