More Airports in the Philippines Can Expect Better Internet Soon

Name something you can find only in the Philippines. I’ll start: slow internet connection.

Unlike other countries, most public places in the Philippines still don’t have access to free WiFi, airports included.

It’s frustrating when we’re stuck waiting for hours before our flights with no choice but to use our mobile data to pass the time because the airport’s WiFi is slow and unreliable.

An internet service provider, however, vows to provide access to fiber-powered internet in more domestic and international gateways soon.

Converge ICT Solutions, Inc. said the expansion will include the following airports: Francisco Bangoy International, Mactan-Cebu International, Bacolod-Silay, Iloilo International, Laoag International, Pagadian, and Zamboanga International.

It will cover all terminals of the gateways, in partnership with the Department of Transportation and airport operators.

Converge has just finished setting up free internet in all terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). The latest installments were conducted at Terminals 1 and 2.

The internet service provider said travelers in those terminals could enjoy “fiber-fast” connectivity for two hours upon logging on to the Converge network. Subscribers may get an additional six hours of free internet access for up to five devices by providing their GoFiber account number on the login page.

The service is the same as those at NAIA Terminals 3 and 4, which have been offering free internet since last year.

Converge said it has activated 105 access points throughout the approximately 148,000-square meter NAIA Terminals 1 and 2.

“There will be several more in the offing for our free public WiFi program for the rest of the year,” Converge CEO and co-founder Dennis Anthony Uy said in a statement.

Converge, one of the providers of fiber-based connectivity services in the country, mainly covers Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Central Luzon, and parts of the Bicol and Ilocos regions.
