Comedian Shyam Rangeela is set to mark his electoral debut by contesting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Varanasi Parliamentary seat in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. The 29-year-old comedian from Rajasthan, who became popular by mimicking PM Modi, announced that he will contest the Lok Sabha polls from Varanasi.
Two-time MP from Varanasi, PM Modi is looking to secure victory from the Parliamentary seat for a third time. Varanasi is going to polls in the eighth phase of Lok Sabha elections on June 1.
He is contesting to ensure that “democracy lives on”, is not merely a symbolic gesture, Shyam Rangeela told The Indian Express. He will fight the Lok Sabha polls “wholeheartedly” and will arrive in Varanasi this weekend to file his nomination papers.
“Hum at least ye kehne ke liye wahan par khade hue honge ke hum yahan par loktantra khatre mein nahin aane denge, logon ko vote ke liye yahan option milega (We will be standing there to at least tell the people that we won’t let democracy come under threat here, to provide an option to people to exercise their right to vote)… unlike Surat or Indore,” he said, referring to the unopposed win for the BJP candidates in these constituencies after Congress candidates withdrew their nominations.
“Even if everyone withdraws their (nomination) papers (in Varanasi), my papers will still be there,” he added.
