Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) are hosting Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 55th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This is a must-win tie for MI and a win here will rule them out of the T20 league. As Hardik walked out for the toss in the must-win game, he pipped Sourav Ganguly in an elite list.

The star all-rounder is playing his 43rd match as the captain of an IPL team and he went past Sourav Ganguly in the list of players with most matches as captain in IPL. Ganguly played 43 matches as the captain.

The Indian legend captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Pune Warriors (PWI) between IPL 2008 to 2012. Both teams failed to clear the league stage under his leadership.

Pandya started his captaincy career in 2022. He joined Gujarat Titans (GT) as their pre-auction pick after MI decided to release him. GT bestowed him with captaincy in their debut season.

Hardik showcased his captaincy skills in IPL 2022 and captained GT to a title win. They defeated Rajasthan Royals in the final. Hardik’s success as GT’s captain saw him join Team India’s leadership group in 2022.

He made his T20I captaincy debut against Ireland in June 2022. Hardik continued his heroics on the captaincy front and led GT to the final of IPL 2023. They lost to Chennai Super Kings in the summit clash.

Hardik remained part of the leadership group and he was Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He will be assisting Rohit in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup too.

Before the IPL 2024 mini-auction, Hardik made his return to MI and replaced Rohit as captain. Rohit captained MI to five IPL title wins between 2013 to 2023.

Mumbai Indians struggling in IPL 2024

Mumbai Indians have had an IPL season to forget so far and they are on the cusp of getting eliminated from the tournament. The five-time IPL Champions have just managed 3 wins from 11 matches and are reeling at the last spot in the points table.

A defeat will rule MI out of IPL 2024. A win over SRH will keep MI’s chances alive but they have a tough road ahead. With a mega-auction set to take place before IPL 2025, it will be interesting to see if Rohit stays with MI or not. The franchise is expected to give a long rope to Hardik and he is likely to be retained before the mega-auction.
