UK to be ‘split in two’ by snow with ‘nine towns and cities’ hit

The dramatic moment a snow plume splits in two and covers the UK has been highlighted by new weather maps. Weather maps and charts from WX Charts, using Met Desk data, show the UK hit by the white stuff on February 28 with wintry flurries scattering and hitting swathes of the country.

Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, and Liverpool could witness to 11-13 cm of snowfall per hour. Inverness, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Manchester, and Birmingham are also set to be hit, WX Charts shows, as the second month of the year ends in snowy fashion.

Jim Dale, a meteorologist from British Weather Services told Express.co.uk: “Mild weather is on the way out this side of the weekend. It will revert more to a seasonal type from then on. It is likely to be a very mixed weather ensuing with a wintry backdrop.”

The meteorologist added to the newspaper on Tuesday (February 20) – a week before the flurries are set to strike: “We can expect early morning and late evening frosts and ice, along with rain, showers of hail, sleet and some snow possible in the Highlands and Grampian.

“By February 28th and into early March, we will be still in the fridge freezer with snow events edging south– mainly for the high ground of northern England and North Wales. But all to play for with concern for scattered sporadic falls elsewhere.”

He went on: “For now, it’s watching briefly but these are the last days of unseasonably mild for some time to come.” The Met Office says of early March: “”Temperatures are likely to be near or slightly above normal overall, with occasional night frosts, but values will fluctuate as weather systems come and go.”

It adds: “From mid-March, the chance of a longer period of more settled and drier weather increases.”
