After a four-year wait, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ended their title drought in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012 by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The Gautam Gambhir-led side chased down the big target of 191 against reigning champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The Yellow Army had successfully defended their title in 2011 and was on the verge of history in 2012.
Manvinder Bisla emerged as an unlikely hero for Kolkata Knight Riders and won their maiden IPL trophy for them in the final. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored a match-winning 89 off just 48 balls. Batting with a strike rate of 185.41, Bisla hit 5 sixes and 8 boundaries in his knock.
Bisla put on a vital 136-run partnership with Jacques Kallis (69). KKR lost the early wicket of Gautam Gambhir for just 2 runs and the pressure was on the uncapped batsman. He did his job to perfection and became a household name after the final.

Bisla wasn’t even slated to play the final as KKR had Brendon McCullum as their wicketkeeper. An injury to Laxmipathy Balaji meant Brett replaced him. Since a team can only have four overseas players in the final XI, KKR brought in Bisla and dropped McCullum.

Manvinder Bisla started his career as an all-rounder. He opened the innings for India at the U19 World Cup and also made his part with the ball. Bisla scored 284 runs and scalped seven wickets in the junior WC. Parthiv Patel, who opened with Bisla, captained the team in the tournament. Paul Valthaty was also part of the WC team.

Bisla represented Haryana in junior cricket before making his debut for them. He made his first-class debut in the 2002/03 season. Bisla’s List A debut came for India in the Emerging Team Trophy 2003. Gautam Gambhir captained the team in the tournament. Apart from Gambhir, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Balaji were also part of his debut game.
Apart from Haryana, Bisla also represented Himachal Pradesh in domestic cricket. He made his T20 debut for HP against a star-studded Delhi in 2007. Virender Sehwag dismissed Bisla for 8 runs in his debut T20. HP won the game by seven wickets.
Bisla started his IPL career with Deccan Chargers. He made his IPL debut for Punjab Kings in 2010. Bisla moved to KKR in 2011 and had a four-year stint with them. He played five matches in 2011, 7 in 2012, 14 in 2013 and one game in 2014. KKR bought him for Rs 60 lakh in the IPL 2014 mega-auction. He was part of the team that won the 2014 IPL trophy.
He was traded to Royal Challengers Bengaluru before IPL 2015. Bisla played one match under Virat Kohli’s leadership. The wicketkeeper-batsman finished his IPL career with 798 runs in 39 matches. His heroics in the IPL 2012 final remains his finest moment in IPL.
Bisla took up commentary after his retirement and shared his insights in domestic cricket. He is part of the IPL 2024 commentary panel and is part of the Haryanvi commentary panel. Virender Sehwag is also doing commentary in Haryanvi.
When Bisla and MS Dhoni batted together
While Bisla IPL’s heroics are well known, not many know that he has played with MS Dhoni in the BCCI Corporate Trophy. In 2009, Bisla and Dhoni propelled Air India Blue into the final by defeating India Revenue. The duo added 200 runs for the second wicket in just 17.3 overs.
Bisla scored 152 off 133 while Dhoni remained unbeaten on 106 off 61 balls as Air India put on a total of 362/1 on the board. India Revenue lost the game by 143 runs. Bisla scored 10 in the final while Dhoni departed for a duck as Air India Blue lost to Air India Red in the final. Robin Uthappa scored an unbeaten 157* for Air India Red.
