Assistant Defence and Veterans’ Affairs Minister Matt Thistlethwaite commemorates Anzac Day from the Malaysian city of Sandakan.
The Malaysian city was part of the Sandakan Death Marches, where more than 2,500 British and Australian soldiers were involved.
Only six of the prisoners survived the march.
“This is the site of one of the worst atrocities ever perpetrated against Australian soldiers in any conflict,” Mr Thistlethwaite told Sky News Australia.
Matt Thistlethwaite remembers one of the ‘worst atrocities’ against Australian soldiers
“It’s a terrible, terrible tragedy – it was a very moving dawn service this morning.
“It’s an honour to be here on behalf of the Australian government and also to thank the Malaysian people who assisted our troops during that time.”
