The moment a drink-driver veered onto the wrong side of the road and smashed into an oncoming car on New Year’s Day has been captured on video.
Horrifying footage shows Djiferson Monteiro’s Ford Fiesta dangerously swinging onto the opposing lane of traffic after he fell asleep at the wheel.
After narrowly avoiding two cars, his Fiesta crashes into the side of an approaching red Volkswagen Golf.
The innocent driver tried to avoid him by swerving onto the grass verge, but was hit head-on and suffered a broken hand and wrist.
When Monteiro was asked his name and age he could barely speak, slurring his words and initially getting his age wrong.

The motorcycle driver went to the drivers aid before an on-duty police officer came to help
The car had been crumpled by the impact and its airbags had exploded
After providing a roadside breath specimen, Monteiro blew 109 – more than three times the legal limit of 35.
Monteiro claimed to officers he had only had one beer that day and checks later revealed he wasn’t even named on the car’s insurance policy.
Footage shows the 35-year-old driving ahead of a motorcycle, whose dashcam was used in evidence following the smash on New Year’s Day 2023.
Monteiro was travelling along Boongate in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, when he began to drift into oncoming traffic.
An on-duty police officer a few cars behind the collision went to the drivers’ aid, before calling for support.
Incredibly after the crash Monteiro made no attempt to get out of his car, didn’t check on the other driver and struggled to interact with officers.
Instead, he sat completely silently, was entirely still and appeared to be in a stupor.
He had to say his name four times before the police officer heard him and when asked his age he muttered something inaudible.
The officer initially thought he said 25 before he added: ’35.’

Monteiro admitted his crimes at Cambridge Crown Court last week
He then took a failed breath test and was arrested before being taken to Peterborough City Hospital as a precaution.
Monteiro was required to provide a blood sample to check his alcohol levels, which he refused, and he was charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
Monteiro, of Thorney, Cambridgeshire, appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday, January 18, where he pled guilty to failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis, dangerous driving and driving without insurance.
He was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
He was disqualified from driving for two years and is required to retake a test, as well as completing a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement (RAR) and 120 hours of unpaid work.
PC Guy Cunningham, who investigated for Cambridgeshire Police, said: ‘Drink driving is a serious issue that the force is continuing to tackle in order to make the roads a safer place.
‘Getting behind the wheel after you’ve had a couple of drinks is selfish, putting not only yourself but other road users at risk. It is not worth the risk, please arrange alternative transport if you consume alcohol.’
