Maps show how much the Conservatives were battered across UK local elections

Labour has regained hold of key local electoral seats across the UK, changing the political landscape in England and Wales.

Conservatives lost major mayoral elections – with labour holding their seats in London, South Yorkshire, Liverpool and Greater Manchester.

New maps have revealed just how much blue turned red over the weekend.

Essex was one of the most highly contested areas for conservatives in this election cycle – but the Tories saw their councillor numbers fall by 13 in Basildon, with Labour gaining nine.

In Castle Point, the Tories were wiped out entirely, losing every seat they were contesting.

Let’s take a deeper look at some of the key battleground areas as further election results are being counted.

In London, Sadiq Khan has won a history third term as London Mayor as Labour notched up victories across the country, including in the closely-watched West Midlands.

Despite initial fears the ULEZ clean air zone could hit his vote, the Labour politician decisively beat Tory Susan Hall, 43.7% to 32.6%.

It is the biggest margin of victory in a London Mayor race ever and sees Khan significantly improve on his 2021 victory when he won by 4.7%.

Maps show how inner London remains a Labour stronghold, while the more suburbs on the city’s outskirts leant Tory.

Key mayoral elections in Liverpool, Manchester, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire were won by Labour, who also claimed wins in York and North Yorkshire – an area which includes Rishi Sunak’s constituency – the East Midlands and the North East.

Tory Mayor Ben Houchen clung on in Tees Valley for a third term while the Lib Dems won more seats than the Tories, including Tunbridge Wells and Devon.

And the Green Party continued its forward march, notably taking its target council of Bristol from Labour.

The Conservatives have endured a miserable set of 2024 local elections, losing almost 500 seats while Labour, the Lib Dems, Greens and independents have celebrated victories.

In the West Midlands, Tory Andy Street was defeated by Labour’s Richard Parker in the West Midlands Mayor race.

The Conservative came close to hanging on, and had distanced his personal brand from his party’s, but has lost out after a recount.

Notably, the Reform Party seems to have tanked completely.
