Since legendary broadcaster Bob Cole passed away on April 24, tributes have been pouring in from across the hockey world, including from Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi.
Domi, who grew up in Toronto while his father Tie played for the Leafs, arrived at Scotiabank Arena ahead of Game 4 against the Boston Bruins donning the famous Hockey Night in Canada baby blue blazer.
The blazer emblazoned with the vintage HNIC logo was a staple on the Saturday night broadcasts.
The Maple Leafs, in conjunction with the Bruins, paid homage to Cole with a video tribute ahead of Game 4 — their first since Cole’s passing. From 1980 to 2008, Cole was the play-by-play broadcaster for Hockey Night in Canada and called many iconic Maple Leafs games, including the final game at Maple Leaf Gardens and Doug Gilmour’s iconic wraparound goal in the 1993 playoffs.
In the first Hockey Night in Canada since Cole died, Sportsnet’s Ron MacLean spoke with Wayne Gretzky about Cole’s impact on the game in Canada.
“He loved being at morning skate and watching the guys practice, he loved coming to games and getting ready and putting those headphones on and calling the game,” Gretzky said. “He was genuinely a passionate guy about the game of hockey.”
