Manchester United’s indecision over the future of Erik ten Hag looks set to cost them Julian Nagelsmann after the German entered into advanced talks over a return to Bayern Munich.

The Germany coach was sacked by Bayern in March 2023, just 18 months after Bayern paid RB Leipzig £15m to extract the coach from his contract.

However, Bayern’s fortunes haven’t turned around and the club are in an even deeper crisis now, with Thomas Tuchel set to leave at the end of the season.

Nagelsmann has proven a success with the national side, reinvigorating them ahead of the European Championships this summer.

The German FA are desperate to keep Nagelsmann and have offered him a deal until the World Cup in 2026 but he is keen to return to club football.

With Bayern previously in for Xabi Alonso, that had opened the door to United.

INEOS are said to be admirers of Nagelsmann, and feel he fits their data-driven model.

But United have left it too late to move for Nagelsmann, as Alonso’s rejection of Bayern has seen the club go back in for Nagelsmann.

He understandably feels he has unfinished business at the Allianz Arena and Sky Germany say a four-year deal is likely.

A decision over Ten Hag will be made at the end of the season, with INEOS keen for the management to focus on the remainder of the campaign.
