Manchester United have opened negotiations with Boca Juniors over the transfer of defender Aaron Anselmino.

The Red Devils were initially linked with a move for the 18-year-old last weekend, with reports in Argentina claiming they were willing to trigger a £18.5m release clause in his contract.

Anselmino has made just seven appearances for Boca but they have already made him one of the highest paid players at the club and inserted a high release clause in his deal, such is their expectations of him.

And Ole now say United have ‘firmed up’ their interest by opening talks with Boca over a deal.

AC Milan are said to be United’s main competitors at this moment in time, but Anselmino is on the radar of every top club in Europe.

United are keen to regenerate their options in central defence, with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans likely to leave this summer.

The club would also be willing to loan Anselmino out for at least a season, but this will be part of negotiations with Boca.

Anselmino, for his part, says he’s keen to remain in Argentina.

‘My head is here at Boca,’ said Anselmino on Monday.

‘I want to win titles here and win titles with this shirt. Nothing has come from outside.’
