Immigration and Home Affairs Ministers ‘not across the detail’ of their portfolios

Liberal MP Keith Wolahan has slammed the Immigration Minister Andrew Giles and Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil for not being “across the detail” of their portfolios as they “weren’t prepared” for the High Court’s ruling on immigration detainees.

It was revealed on Monday that seven murderers and 37 sex offenders were among the 149 immigration detainees released last year.

“We need to go back to last year, the September High Court decision of NZYQ,” Mr Wolahan told Sky News Australia,” Mr Hill told Sky News Australia.

“When we put these questions to the government, and, to the minister, we were told that it was a big surprise, a jack-in-the-box moment … and it was unexpected.

“What we’ve heard from Senate Estimates recently is that there’s no way this was unexpected.

“Of course, the High Court will make its own decisions on the law, but it’s about how you respond, and what we’ve found from this government is that they weren’t prepared for that response, and they have shown themselves to be wanting since.

“This minister is not across the detail, and he’s not across his portfolio.”
