Liverpool star 'in contention' for Brighton clash after significant injury layoff

Curtis Jones is ‘expected to be in contention’ to face Brighton this weekend after over a month on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

The midfielder has been on the treatment table since sustaining a high ankle sprain during the 4-1 win against Brentford on 17 February, missing the Carabao Cup final as well as some huge clashes in the Premier League.

Liverpool have also been without the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch in the engine room over the past month, as well as long-term absentees Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s injury woes are starting to ease a little ahead of the run-in, with Jones potentially available for the visit of the Seagulls this weekend according to journalist Ian Doyle.

A HUGE LIVERPOOL INJURY UPDATE

Writing for the Liverpool Echo ahead of this Sunday’s Anfield clash with Brighton, journalist Doyle provided a detailed update on Liverpool’s injured stars.

Jones is reportedly expected to be available in some capacity for the match this weekend, while Ibrahima Konate is fit again after featuring for France over the international period.

Andy Robertson did limp off during Scotland’s defeat to Northern Ireland midweek – Conor Bradley scoring the winner in that fixture – and ‘Liverpool are hopeful scans will confirm no serious damage’.

There were concerns over the fitness of Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo as well prior to the international break, but both featured for their countries over the past week.

The bad news for the Reds is that Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both still unavailable according to Doyle, but they are ‘more likely’ to be available for the clash with Manchester United on 7 April.

The Portuguese has already started individual training, with youngster Stefan Bajcetic also likely to return to team training ‘shortly’.

Alisson has been missing in goal since early February but is still ‘several weeks’ away from team training, with the Brazilian expected to return before the end of April.

Thiago is likely to be sidelined for the rest of the season and has almost certainly played his final game for the Reds, while Joel Matip has recently returned to running on grass – although he could still miss the rest of the campaign.
