LE SSERAFIM’s Coachella debut sparks conversation on K-pop’s live performance standards

The biggest music festival in the US, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, welcomed K-pop gir group LE SSERAFIM to its Sahara Stage on April 13.

Before their second anniversary, LE SSERAFIM made history this year by becoming the K-pop group invited to perform a solo stage here the quickest.

Coachella, known for producing live performances, made the fans anticipate LE SSERAFIM’s vocals even more, as they also had a recent controversy in South Korea about their live vocal issue in an encore in a music show. The “scandal” began when the members’ most recent title track, “Easy,” did not live up to expectations during an encore performance following their victory in a music show.

The group went 40 minutes with hit songs like “ANTIFRAGILE,” “FEARLESS,” “UNFORGIVEN,” “Perfect Night,” “EASY,” and “SMART.”

In addition to the recent criticism about their singing abilities during the music show’s encore, some were unimpressed with the group’s live performance and blamed Hybe for accepting the Coachella invitation when they were not prepared to perform for such a large audience.

Coachella is a festival known to really bring out the best in artist’s live performance, but fans feel that the group failed to impress their crowd.

Some fans compared them to K-pop girl groups BLACKPINK, 2NE1, and Aespa, who were able to perform on the Coachella stage and blow their audiences away.

LE SSERAFIM’s stage has also been tagged as the “WORST,” upsetting fans who thought their “poor” live performances represented K-pop.

On the contrary, FEARNOTs (the group’s fandom) defended the girls, pointing out that it should be remembered that in addition to singing, they displayed impressive choreography for 50 minutes and validated their status as “Performance Powerhouses.”

Many claimed that the Coachella audience still praised and enjoyed the quintet’s performance, and according to NME, they gave the group a 4/5 star review for their hot performance.

On April 15, Sakura penned a letter to her fans in Japanese, reflecting on what happened during their Coachella stage. For her, it was their best performance yet.

Some social media users and K-pop stans were not happy about Sakura’s post.

On the other hand, some also came to defend Sakura.

What do you think? Did LE SSERAFIM deliver a good performance, or do they need to improve a little bit more?
