'He Still Lost': Fox News Host Balks at Trump, Cuts Away From Speech as Ex-President Says 'Bad Things Happened' in 2020 Election

A Fox News host reacted to Donald Trump’s boasting that he received more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016 by interrupting the campaign speech to explain to viewers that Trump lost the 2020 election.

Knewz.com has learned that Trump’s remarks were made as he visited Eagle Pass, Texas, a city that has become the focal point for immigration policy debates about whether state or federal governments should manage the border, according to Mediaite, a news outlet covering American media and politics.

The report cited a Fox News livestream of a campaign speech the former president made in Texas in which he bragged about “getting many millions more votes” and said “We did much better in 2020 than we ever even thought about doing in 2016.”

However, when Trump said “very bad things happened”, alluding to his false claim that the 2020 election was rigged, Fox News cut away from the speech.

Cavuto then came on the air and said “In fact, he did get millions more votes. He still lost that election. That is not in doubt anymore. That’s not being debated anymore.”

Fox News, which was once a major contributor to the idea that the 2020 election was stolen, reached a US$787 million to Dominion Voting Systems in April last year after the court determined it had promoted lies about the company’s technology.

The news giant’s reputation was dragged through the mud during the trial, as the trial allowed damaging information to become public, such as Fox News executives privately expressing disbelief in Trump’s election fraud claims even though the network they ran continued to promote the lies.

In that context, Cavuto’s remarks, and the decision from Fox News to cut away from live streaming the speech, represent a notable shift in broadcast strategy.

Both major presidential candidates visited Texas on February 29 in an effort to shore up their accolades regarding the border.

Trump visited Eagle Pass and, as Knewz.com previously reported, an online group of locals called the “Eagle Pass Border Coalition” were not pleased with Trump’s visit, calling it a “desperate visit” by a “twice-indicted” man.

U.S. President Joe Biden visited Brownsville, which is 300 miles to the east. He met with border control agents and tried to convey a sense of calm at the border.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott decided to pursue a policy of confrontation with the Biden administration over border management.

Under his administration, the state began bussing newly arrived migrants to big cities like Chicago, where they are often dropped off in freezing cold temperatures without much guidance about where to go for help.

Texas also installed buoys along a stretch of the Rio Grande that critics say could make it much easier for a migrant trying to cross the river to drown. A federal appeals court ordered the state to remove the barriers in December, 2023.
