The “comfort margin” for Labor in Parliament House would be “really, really low” if they lost the seat of Dunkley in Saturday’s by-election, says Monash University Senior Lecturer Dr Zareh Ghazarian.
“The Labor Party currently holds 78 seats … any Party to be in government must have at least 76 seats,” Mr Ghazarian told Sky News Australia.
“So for the Labor Party, the stakes are high.”
Mr Ghazarian also pointed to the potential pressure which could be heaped upon the Coalition if they could not manage a percentage swing.
“If they are unable to attract voters in a seat like Dunkley, then many in the Liberal Party would start to be a bit nervous about their prospects of being able to win over marginal electorates at the next general election,” he said.
