La vitesse excessive ou inadaptée est la cause principale des accidents de la route, rappelle mardi l’Agence wallonne pour la sécurité routière (AWSR) dans un communiqué. Selon ses estimations, chaque année 70 personnes perdent la vie dans des accidents liés à la vitesse et près de 2.000 autres sont blessées en Wallonie. Elle lance donc une nouvelle campagne de sensibilisation pour conscientiser les usagers à cette réalité et les encourager à rouler moins vite car « ralentir, c’est voir venir ».

Selon un récent sondage de l’AWSR, près d’un automobiliste sur six (15 %) déclare fréquemment dépasser les limitations de vitesse. C’est au sein des zones limitées à 30km/h que les conducteurs sont les plus nombreux à admettre au moins parfois dépasser les limitations (73 % contre 66 % en zone 50 et 63 % sur les routes limitées à 90 km/h). Les gros excès de vitesse (plus de 30 km/h) sont en revanche plus fréquents sur les routes où la vitesse maximale autorisée est plus élevée.

Or, une vitesse plus élevée entraîne des distances de réaction et de freinage plus longues et une violence d’impact plus importante en cas de collision, souligne l’AWSR. Par ailleurs, à une vitesse élevée, n’importe quel conducteur manque de maîtrise. Sa perception de l’environnement est moins bonne, ce qui peut l’amener à négliger ou mal interpréter des éléments importants tels que les panneaux ou feux de signalisation ainsi que la présence d’autres usagers.

Des imprévus régulièrement

Les imprévus sont pourtant fréquents sur la route. Un conducteur wallon sur deux déclare ainsi avoir dû effectuer un freinage d’urgence ou avoir été amené à se déporter brusquement au cours des trois derniers mois, en raison d’une situation ou d’un élément imprévu.

Dans ce contexte d’imprévisibilité, rouler moins vite confère un avantage précieux : le temps. « En réduisant sa vitesse, un conducteur augmente en effet considérablement le temps dont il disposera pour évaluer les situations et y réagir de manière appropriée », conclut l’AWSR.
