Reid Maxwell sets Canadian record, qualifies for Paris 2024 in men's S8 100m backstroke
Good job for the Oakville Aquatic Club to support their athletes. We turn the page quickly and there's just three men racing against the clock here In this men's pair of 100m backstroke, 2 of them have set multiple Canadian records this week. Cheryl Giammicelli has set 4 Canadian records, including twice in the 50 breast and the 100 breast. It did it in the heats and finals and there he is, trains in Hamilton. He won the gold medal in the 50m butterfly. He's an S7. And this man, Reen Maxwell has also set a lot of Canadian records. He's also with his swim in the 400m freestyle, Met the qualification time, so he's off to Paris every time he hits the water. It seems he's setting the record. He's only young, he's 16. This is Alex Elliott. He qualified last night. Made the team in the 200 meter individual medley originally out of Kitchener. Does a lot of his training in Quebec City. They flew under the radar a little bit, didn't he, when his teammate broke the world record? Nicholas Bennett exactly. But he maintained his focus. Was able to get under the time and he'll be heading off. He's an S10. He's Alex Elliott. You'll have lane #4. All right. This might set up a little easier for us to explain. Byron. Alex Elliott in the middle. S10. He should be the fastest he needs to go. One O 167 and then on his left Reed. Mick Maxwell in lane 5 is an S8. He needs to go one O 917, so why don't remember, one O 9 and then Charles Emachelli from Hamilton is the S7, so his time would be slower than the other two. He needs to go 112.25 for an automatic birth. If they're close they might get considered, but the automatic birth is the key. You want to get it out of the way if you can. As we've said though, Alex Elliott and the number four has already been in essence name because he was so, so under that automatic cut off, take your marks, we're under way in the men's pair of 100m backstroke. The Canadian record by the way in the S10 category is 60.33 seconds held by the man sitting about 8 feet away from S Ben while you want as he's calling this race for French CBC. And that is the record that Elliott is chasing and Benoit was a standout on the Paralympic and the Paris scene for many, many years. For Canada, Alex Elliott is really taking charge at this point of the race. It's going down under 30, just a little over 30 seconds. 30.5. Might be tough to get to the his personal best time and that cut off time but as we said he's already qualified. This will be a bonus event when he gets to Paris for the Paralympics. So Elliott is and four. Reed Maxwell has already set 3 Canadian records. This week is in lane 5 front of the Edmonton Piano Swim Club. There he is in the upper of the two yellow line lanes. But here comes Alex Elliott trying to get under one O 167 and we've just outside it. Maybe you can get the B standard one O 4 O3. Here comes Maxwell and he has done it. He is under 1O917 and so Reed Maxwell has nailed the time. Charles Giammicelli is racing in in his backstroke leg and he went 1/29, 8:00 this morning. And Byron, he has better that by over 3 seconds on 26 for Giamicelli Reed Maxwell's only 16 years of age. The man that finished second, There's Elliott, and he is a newcomer on the scene as we mentioned, and he has got a very, very bright future. A lot of the back strokers actually do like to wear nose plugs. You don't see it in any of the other sport, any other sport, discipline, swimming, disciplines. However, the back strokers, a lot of them really do like to have nose plugs. I'd say maybe 25% of them. And here comes Maxwell. We say every time he hits the water he seems to get a record. He got second place in there and he made the qualifying time. And you can see the difference of the categories there. Ali, it's an S10. Reed. Maxwell's an S8. But because of the different classification, Maxwell actually scored more points. So he actually would get the gold medal in a mixed race like this. So Reed Maxwell does it again. Another Canadian record and qualifies for Paris.
