A pretty little seaside village has won plaudits from Brits all around the country after they realised it was one of the best places to visit in England. The quaint little Devon village is home to one of the nicest beaches in the region, attracting visitors from all over.

While it might have some of the best natural scenery, it also has one of the weirdest names in the country. Beer, in East Devon, boasts an array of outdoors landscapes and general activities which few other towns can match, including caves and tramways with beautiful views.

A typical day for tourists in Beer would start at the beach, where people love to relax on the gorgeous shingle and occasionally go for a dip in the water, which is relatively warm compared to the rest of the UK. Deckchairs can be hired for a reasonable price, although in the winter most people go for a walk.

Beach at Beer in Devon

Beer is nestled in among the ancient Jurassic Coast cliffs which conceal evidence of a world from millions of years ago where dinosaurs roamed and strange plants grew. While many people might like to crack open a beer on top of these wonderful cliffs, the town of Beer isn’t actually named after the drink – it comes from the old English word ‘beare’, which means woodland.

After checking out the beach and cliffs, most people naturally progress onto Beer’s Quarry Caves, which tell some fascinating human history. The man made caves date back to the Roman age and have supplied stone for some of the most important buildings in the country, including Westminster Abbey, Exeter Cathedral, and various others in the South West.

The village centre is absolutely tranquil too, with its winding streets filled with stone buildings, historic thatched cottages and flower displays. The community is tight-knit and is known for having a brilliant street party at the Queen’s Jubilee, as everyone celebrated the reign of Elizabeth.

Nearby Seaton, meanwhile, is another picturesque village to add to your bucket list, and tourists absolutely adore its miniature double decker trams which crawl through the beautiful countryside, allowing those on board to soak up views of the Seaton Wetlands.

Reviewing Beer Beach and the general area, one visitor from Chicherster wrote on TripAdvisor said: “We’ve been to Beer many times however this is only the second time we’ve stayed. Both times we’ve stayed in the Dolphin hotel. We love Beer, the beach and surrounding areas is lovely and the walk to Seaton is fantastic.”

Another tourist, from the Wirral, added: “This is a lovely place, as if time has passed it by. The overall setting is spectacular. It’s a steep approach to a pebble beach with fisherman’s boats and gear making a picturesque setting against the high white cliffs that surround the cove of Beer.”

While one Londoner chimed in: “Lovely beach, would not have even known about it let alone found it if our local friends took us there. It is clean and laid out with sets and umbrellas with a great cafe to grab some good food. Well worth a visit.”
