Klay Thompson brick trend, explained: Twitter’s AI confuses 0-for shooting performance with ‘brick-vandalism spree’
No, Klay Thompson isn’t wanted for vandalism. Even if he did rain bricks down in Sacramento.
X’s AI bot Grok suggested on the social media site formerly known as Twitter that Thompson was accused of a “bizarre brick-vandalizing spree.”
“Authorities are investigating the claims after several individuals reported their houses being damaged, with windows shattered by bricks,” the AI bot wrote. “Klay Thompson has not yet issued a statement regarding the accusations. The incidents have left the community shaken, but no injuries were reported. The motive behind the alleged vandalism remains unclear.”
Thompson has a decent alibi for this brick-vandalizing spree. He logged 32 minutes on the court at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento trying to help the Warriors top the Kings in the No. 9 vs. No. 10 Play-In Tournament matchup. But the Warriors lost, 118-94, ending their season.
How did AI get this so wrong? Here’s what you need to know.

Klay Thompson brick trend, explained
Thompson went 0-for-10 from the field, including 0-for-6 from 3-point range, in the Play-In loss for Golden State. He did not attempt a free throw, meaning he finished his night with a goose egg in the points column.
Grok is still a new feature on X and has a tendency to make mistakes. Users occasionally are able to influence the messages from the bot to develop incorrect trend descriptions. Following Thompson’s 0-point performance, several users posted the exact same message, copying and pasting the language into numerous tweets.
That message, along with others, appears to have confused the AI bot into believing Thompson was out vandalizing homes in the Sacramento area with bricks.
Needless to say, that is not the case.

Klay Thompson stats
Thompson logged 32 minutes and did not score a single point for the Warriors. He brought down four rebounds and one assist in the loss to the Kings.
The game marked the first time in Thompson’s career he logged more than 11 minutes and went scoreless, according to Stathead. It was also the first time he attempted more than two field-goal attempts without any points.
The performance by Thompson also made some unfortunate history for the Splash Brother. He became only the 20th player in NBA history to be held without a point while attempting at least 10 field goals and playing at least 30 minutes, according to Stathead.

Is Klay Thompson retiring?
There has been plenty of speculation the 34-year-old shooting guard might call it a career following last night’s performance. He averaged only 17.9 points per game in 2023-24, his lowest mark since his second in the league, and had several games in which he was not the starter for the first time since his rookie season.
Thompson has not publicly given any indication that he will be retiring after the season, though he has made it clear he wants to retire a Warrior. He said in October 2022 he had no plans of retiring in 2024, though that was 18 months ago.
The 2023-24 season marked his final year under contract with the Warriors, meaning Golden State would have to have interest in re-signing the veteran guard for another year if he is to return.
If he does make the decision to call it a career, his performance last night shows he could be ready for a second career in masonry.
