The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE, a previously China-only graphics card, is finally going global. This ‘Golden Rabbit Edition’ graphics card is essentially a cut down version of their flagship RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX, sharing the same Navi 31 chip as them but binned lower resulting in lower performance than the latter two GPUs, but still carrying plenty of performance for not only 1440p gamers but also for 4K gamers on a budget.
AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE goes global, cut down Navi 31 GPU with 16GB VRAM for 1440p gaming
The Radeon RX 7900 GRE features the same Navi 31 graphics compute die as AMD’s other flagship RDNA 3 GPUs, but binned lower to where it now has just 80 compute units compared to the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT, which have 96 and 84 compute units respectively. It’s certainly a neat idea, as this lets AMD use chips that otherwise wouldn’t meet the requirements for the higher end cards yet still have plenty of life left in them. This new GPU is clocked at 1880MHz which can boost up to 2245MHz, with 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a 256-bit memory bus.
The RX 7900 GRE also features 160 AI accelerators for tackling AI-related workloads, 5,120 stream processors and 64MB of AMD Infinity Cache. With a rated 260W total board power, AMD recommends a 700W power supply if you’re gonna get a Radeon RX 7900 GRE for yourself.
Seeing as it’s a cut down RX 7900 XT, the RX 7900 GRE is more of an upper midrange graphics card than a true flagship GPU, which is perhaps why AMD is touting its capabilities for native 1440p gaming more than anything else. According to AMD, the RX 7900 GRE is able to deliver 14% more FPS-per-dollar compared to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 which launched early last year for the same price. The biggest gains appear to be in titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, though these numbers are from AMD themselves so you should take them with a pinch of salt.
The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is now available globally, with a recommended retail price of USD549 (~RM2,617.91), which would position it as an outstanding alternative against the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super that has a RRP of RM3,240. Of course, you can expect the price to fluctuate depending on the specific models from their partners such as Acer, Asrock, Asus, PowerColor, Gigabyte, Sapphire and XFX.
