TALLÍN, Estonia (AP) — Las autoridades de Kazajistán detuvieron el martes a un exministro del Interior en relación con la letal represión policial por los disturbios que sufrió el país en 2022, según indicaron medios kazajos.

La fiscalía anunció el lunes la detención de Erlan Turgumbayev por cargos de “abuso de poder y de la autoridad oficial resultante en graves consecuencias” por la dura represión policial de los disturbios. El Ministerio de Asuntos Internos de Kazajistán es el responsable de la fuerza policial del país.

Los disturbios comenzaron el 2 de enero de 2022 en la ciudad de Zhanaozen con una protesta contra la brusca subida de precio del gas licuado de petróleo, utilizado habitualmente como combustible de vehículos en Kazajistán.

Esas protestas se convirtieron en críticas contra la corrupción, la desigualdad económica y el exlíder Nursultan Nazarbayev, que según sus críticos se benefició de la enorme riqueza energética del país desde que asumió el poder en 1991.

Nazarbayez renunció a la presidencia en 2019, pero seguía teniendo un poder considerable en el momento de las protestas como líder del consejo de seguridad de Kazajistán.

En Almaty, la ciudad más grande del país, las protestas se tornaron violentas y el presidente, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, dio orden de disparar a matar cuando los inconformes asaltaron edificios del gobierno. Las autoridades dijeron que 238 personas habían muerto en los disturbios.

Tokayev impulsó entonces una serie de reformas, como limitar la presidencia a un único mandato de siete años. También destituyó a Nazarbayev como jefe del consejo de seguridad y la capital, que había recibido el nombre de Nursultán en honor a Nazarbayev, recuperó su nombre anterior de Astaná.

Turgumbayev fue destituido un mes después de los disturbios.
