‘Kaizer Chiefs is no threat, just a big name’ ex-Sundowns striker

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Alton Meiring believes the Brazilians might not finish the season unbeaten in the league but dismissed Kaizer Chiefs’ chances of beating them.

In 2021, Downs surrendered a 21-match unbeaten record to Amakhosi. The two giants are set to clash in two weeks.

Rulani Mokwena’s side have struggled of late and needed penalties to win their CAF Champions League quarter-final tie against Young Africans. The Tshwane giants also needed a penalty shootout to overcome Pretoria University in the Nedbank quarter-finals. Mokwena has cited fatigue as the reason why his side has struggled for wins in the past month or so.

Meiring believes Sundowns are still a team to beat and expects them to wrap up the league soon.

“We must remember that some people are also fighting for their lives. They will win the league, Sundowns, but it’s not going to be easy. I don’t think Sundowns are struggling, it’s just that the other teams are fighting for their lives now,” Meiring told KickOff.

Meiring says Sundowns will overcome Kaizer Chiefs and win the title

“Relegation-bound clubs’ players are looking to impress their future employers. That mindset is stepping in now. If you put somebody in a corner and have his back against the wall, you will see how that person all of a sudden develops skills that you never knew they had. It’s because they wanna survive.”

Sundowns have cruised this season, with rivals like Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs nowhere to be found. Meirin

“Sundowns players are not tired because that would be an excuse as they bought all the best players. It’s just that they are facing teams who are desperate to survive relegation. So, those teams’ players have to set up, they don’t wanna lose their contracts,” Meiring continued.

“I don’t believe Sundowns players are tired, that’s nonsense. They are professionals. They are remaining with nine league matches. Aargh… Kaizer Chiefs is no threat to Sundowns. It’s just a big name. Sundowns will win the league anyway. Yes, they will get a defeat in their remaining matches, that is quite possible.”

Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs will play on 30 April at the FNB Stadium.

“And they are still going to play in the (Nedbank Cup) semi-finals game with Stellenbosch, I don’t think it’s gonna be an easy game. It will also weigh them down. It’s gonna upset them, but they will win the league. Every team that is still going to face the bottom-of-the-table teams should expect tough times ahead,” he concluded.
