Joint counter-terrorist task force investigating attack

So we had a meeting of the National Security Committee this morning, but the terrorism threat level remains at possible. It’s been there since 2022 when it was downgraded from probable 2. Possible. And the Director General of ASIO, that’s Australia’s domestic spy agency, says that even though it is possible, that doesn’t mean that the risk is negligible. And we also heard from the Prime Minister today saying that this was a particularly distressing circumstance and raising concerns. About the role of social media as well, here’s some of what he had to say. This is a disturbing incident. There is no place for violence in our community. There is no place for violent extremism. We are a peace loving nation. This is a time to unite, not divide as a community and as a country. And what’s the Opposition leader had to say on this? Has spoken this afternoon and condemned the violent attack and also the rioting outside of the church last night. He’s also expressed his concern for the victims of both this attack and that on Saturday at Bondi Junction. He says there is no place for violence in any form and that he’s written to the Prime Minister offering the coalition’s support for any changes. Or response to these incidents. Here is Peter Dutton speaking earlier. I’ve written to the Prime Minister this morning offering this full support of the Coalition on any issues that the government might think needs to be addressed in the aftermath of the tragedy that we saw in Bondi that we’ve seen in western Sydney last night. The federal police commissioner has also spoken this afternoon, Joe, and that’s Reese Kershaw. He said that this is a very complex investigation, it will be thorough and no stone will be left unturned.
