Ingredient

6 small red apples, peeled and cored 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed Whipped cream or ice cream, for serving (optional)

Method & Directions

Preheat your oven and prepare the pans

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Grease a muffin tin or individual tart pans with butter and set aside.

Prepare the toffee sauce

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring until smooth and combined. Add the lemon juice, cinnamon, and vanilla extract, and continue to cook for another minute until fragrant. Remove from heat and set aside.

Prepare the apples & coat them with the toffee sauce

Cut the apples into thin slices and arrange them in the bottom of each muffin tin or tart pan, covering the entire surface in a single layer. Spoon the toffee sauce over the apples, ensuring they are well coated.

Prepare the puff pastry

Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and cut out circles slightly larger than the diameter of the muffin tin or tart pans. Place the pastry circles over the apples and tuck in the edges around the sides.

Bake the tarts

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes.

Serve and enjoy

Carefully invert the tarts onto a serving plate, allowing the caramelized apples to become the top of the tarts. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.
