Most lucrative speed cameras circling Adelaide revealed

The most lucrative speed cameras outside of Adelaide’s metropolitan area have been exposed ahead of the school holidays, with the fixed camera on the South Eastern Freeway at Crafers amassing nearly $4 million in fines on its own.

All up, the top 10 collectively raked in more than $7 million in 2023, leading the opposition to accuse the government of using the cameras to raise revenue.

“They should be used as a safety device and not a revenue-raising device,” opposition spokesperson John Gardner said.

The top 10 collectively raked in more than $7 million in 2023, leading the state opposition to accuse the government of using the cameras to raise revenue.

Police Minister Joe Szacaks dismissed those allegations.

“I would actually like to see less money being collected because it means people are doing the right thing,” he said.

The figures, compiled by the RAA, also list the top sites in regional areas where drivers are being stung by mobile speed cameras.

That list is again topped by cameras in the Adelaide Hills, but 50km/h zones within popular holiday areas are also on the list.

The RAA said it would support the use of warning signs for drivers near mobile speed cameras, which are used in other states.

“The speed cameras are part and parcel in ensuring that we get largely fairly good compliance overall,” senior manager of safety and infrastructure Charles Mountain said.
