Subdural Hematoma image

A subdural hematoma happens when a blood vessel in the head tears and blood collects between the inner skull and outer lining of the brain. In an acute subdural, the collection can expand quicky and rapidly cause brain damage and even death if not promptly treated. But with timely evacuation, there could be minimal residual effects. A chronic subdural enlarges gradually with more subtle symptoms, such as drowsiness, headaches and confusion, and sometimes no symptoms at all. Small chronic subdural hematomas don’t always need immediate surgery. Either way, the prognosis is usually good.

The prognosis for a subdural hematoma depends on the treatment received how much early, age of the patient, and severity of injury. Most of the patients survive though they suffer from permanent brain damage.

Prognosis of chronic subdural hematoma is best if they remain awake and alert after the head injury. Older patients have a higher risk of bleeding again.

The mortality associated with acute subdural hematoma range from 36-79%. Many survivors do not regain their previous levels of functioning due to surgical damage.
