ireland weather: hopes of prolonged scorcher quashed as met eireann forecast unsettled week ahead

Hopes of a prolonged heatwave have been scuppered as Met Éireann forecast a colder unsettled week ahead

Met Éireann has crushed any hopes of a prolonged scorcher as they warn of heavy showers setting in as the weather turns cooler from the end of the weekend moving into next week.

The national forecaster previously confirmed temperatures were set to soar this weekend, reaching a melting 22C on Saturday, and while many were hoping this would extend into next week, or even the whole weekend, dreams were quashed as Met Éireann warned of unsettled weather approaching.

Thankfully, a bout of high pressure will continue to dominate until later in the weekend, bringing dry settled weather, with a good lot of sunshine and it’ll be warm with temperatures in the high teens to the low twenties.

However, come Sunday, a gradual change to more unsettled weather will begin. Although temperatures will remain high, showers will break out, some heavy, between dry periods with the weather beginning to turn cooler moving into next week. From the glorious temperatures poised to set in over the coming days to the unsettled end of the weekend, here is Met Éireann’s forecast:

Wednesday

Any early morning mist and fog will clear and it’ll be dry in most places today. A little light rain and drizzle will move into parts of the west and northwest through the morning and afternoon, mainly into western parts of Connacht and Ulster, moving northeastwards and becoming confined to northern parts of Ulster later.

While it’ll be mostly cloudy, there’ll be some bright or sunny spells too, mainly in the east and south. Highest temperatures of around 13C to 19C, warmest in the midlands and east, while it’ll be coolest in the west and north and along the south coast.

Winds will be mostly light to moderate south to southwest, becoming a little fresher for a time in some western and northwestern coastal parts.

Any rain and drizzle in northern parts, will clear early tonight, and the rest of the night will be dry with a mix of cloud and some clear spells. Some mist and fog patches will form. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 10C in light variable breezes.

Thursday

Tomorrow will be a dry day and while there’s still likely to be a good deal of cloud, some good spells of sunshine will develop too, albeit hazy at times in places.

Getting warmer, with temperatures a little higher than today’s, ranging from 16C to 20C generally, a little lower in southern coastal parts, in mostly light southerly breezes

Thursday night will be dry with a good lot of cloud for a time, but with good clear spells developing later in the night. There may be a few isolated mist and fog patches in southern parts. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 11C in mostly light south to southeast breezes.

Friday

Friday will be a dry day with plenty of sunshine developing. Highest temperatures generally of 18C to 22C, warmest inland, a little cooler in coastal parts. Winds will be light to moderate and mostly southerly, with onshore sea breezes developing in some coastal parts.

Friday night will be dry with long clear spells and with some mist and fog forming. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 10C in light southerly breezes.

Saturday

The mist and fog will clear early on Saturday morning and it’ll be another dry, warm day. There’ll be lots of sunshine once again, possibly turning a little hazy at times though. Highest temperatures generally of 19C to 22C, warmest inland. It’ll be a touch cooler in some coastal parts of the south and east. Winds will be mostly moderate southerly.

It’ll likely stay dry in most areas on Saturday night with some clears spells, though there’s the chance of some showers or rain, mainly across the south and west. Lowest temperatures of 9C to 11C in light southerly or variable breezes.

Sunday

There’s likely to more cloud around on Sunday with showers breaking out, some heavy, but a good lot of dry weather is likely too, with some further spells of sunshine. There’s a lower possibility of a more persistent spell of rain moving in from the west.

Still warm, especially in the midlands and east, with highest temperatures in these areas of 18C to 21C, but temperatures dropping back to between 14C and 18C across the northwest, west and southwest.
