Watch: Luka Doncic joins legendary club with 73-point game

watch: luka doncic joins legendary club with 73-point game

Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic.

Only four NBA players have ever scored 73 points or more in a game. Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, David Thompson — and now Luka Doncic.

The game pitted Doncic against Trae Young, the Atlanta Hawks guard who Dallas traded for Doncic on draft night in 2018. Doncic scored 73 points, and he didn’t even take that many shots!

Doncic shot 25-of-33 from the field, sinking more than three-quarters of his attempts. He missed just one of his 16 foul shots and made eight of his 13 three-point attempts. That means that on two-pointers, Doncic made a whopping 85 percent of his shots.

It’s the most points in the history of the Dallas Mavericks and would be the most points for any franchise not named the Warriors or Lakers. Only Chamberlain and Bryant scored more points in a single game than Doncic, while Thompson matched his 73 points in 1978.

You can watch every one of those 73 points below:

Doncic is now one of only nine players in NBA history with more than one game of 60 or more points. One of those players is Doncic’s rival, Devin Booker, who had 62 for the Phoenix Suns Friday night, in a loss.

He also had seven assists, the most anyone has had in a 70-point game besides Donovan Mitchell, who dished 11 assists in his 71-point game last January. With Doncic assisting on two three-pointers, that means he accounted for 89 Dallas points.

Not only did Doncic do it on a night where Booker went off, he did in Atlanta, the team that passed on him in 2018. Atlanta fans could only applaud Doncic’s performance and wonder what might have been.

Young is an All-Star player. But there’s only one Luka.
