PETALING JAYA: A police inspector has been arrested in Johor after he was alleged to have sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl.

Johor police chief M Kumar said the inspector, who is attached to the Pontian police headquarters, allegedly committed the offence at Taman Johor Jaya, Johor Bahru, at 6pm yesterday.

Kumar said the teenager lodged a police report at 9.21pm yesterday and the 29-year-old suspect was detained in the Bandar Seri Alam area at 11pm.

The case is being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.

“Johor police are committed to addressing integrity issues and criminal acts within the force to ensure that the public maintains their trust in us,” said Kumar.

“Any officer who is believed to have committed a crime will be dealt with decisively and without compromise based on the principle of equality before the law under Article 8 of the Federal Constitution.”

The inspector has been remanded for six days until April 28.

Meanwhile, in a separate case in Kangar, Perlis, the owner of a children’s shelter pleaded not guilty in the sessions court to two charges of sexually assaulting a teenage girl three years ago, while his wife pleaded not guilty to abetting him.

Azim Zaidi Abdul Rahman, 55, and his wife Harisun Abdul Rahman, 53, made the plea after the charges were read out before judge Musyiri Peet, Bernama reported.

The couple was accused of committing the offences on the 17-year-old girl at a house in Jejawi, Arau on Sept 21, 2021.

Azim faces charges of physical sexual assault on a child under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Harisun faces a charge of abetting under Section 109 of the Penal Code.
