Indonesian volcano's multiple eruptions prompt evacuations

Rescuers on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi are working around the clock to try and evacuate thousands of people after a volcano there erupted 5 times. Bolava has been spewing out of and it sent a column of ash high into the sky. France 24’s Charlie James has the latest for us. A terrifying scene as fire and lightning fill the sky Indonesia’s Mount Ruang erupted at least five times Wednesday evening, spewing volcanic ash about 70,000 feet into the atmosphere. Local people were evacuating themselves because of small rocks spewing from the eruption. People were panicked and they scrambled. So we will make sure that there is no one left stranded along the coastline. The crater continued to emit smoke throughout the day Thursday. Residents on the northern side of Sulawesi Island have been ordered to stay at least 6 kilometers away from the mountain. More than 11,000 people live in the affected area and are being relocated. Prisoners were evacuated and travelers trapped at a nearby airport that temporarily closed due to ash. Get out the loading. We had already loaded our luggage and checked in our belongings. And we waited for about an hour, only to be informed that our flight was cancelled due to the eruption. Ongoing risks from the eruption include the possibility that part of the volcano could collapse into the sea and cause a tsunami. Indonesians have a recent reminder of that danger. In December 2018, another volcano there erupted and collapsed, triggering a powerful tsunami that killed more than 400 people. Up next.
