India’s first Vande Metro rolls out, trials to begin in July: All you need to know
The first Vande Bharat Metro, a short-distance variant of the Vande Bharat Express trains, was rolled out from the Rail Coach Factory in Punjab’s Kapurthala. Trial runs for the new-age metro are expected to commence in July.
Officials quoted by PTI say the Vande Metro will provide a shuttle-like experience at an affordable price, facilitating both inter-city and intra-city travel.
A senior official, closely associated with the project, said, “All preparations are going on to start its trial run from July 2024 so that its services can be offered to people as soon as possible.”
What is the Vande Metro?
Vande Metro is a short-distance variant of the Vande Bharat Express trains, which is aimed at making travel quicker on a daily basis. The metro will be able to travel at a speed of 130 kilometers per hour. The network will connect 124 cities within a distance of approximately 100-250 kilometers, allowing commuters to travel both within and outside the city.
“The trains have a unique coach configuration, in which four coaches will constitute one unit and a minimum of 12 coaches will make one Vande Metro,” an official said, adding that the Railways will initially launch a minimum of 12 Vande Metro coaches and will increase up to 16 as per the demand on the route.
“The trains will have high acceleration and deceleration which will help it cover more stoppages in less time,” he said.
