‘I’m not a fly-by-night’ ex-Pirates and Bafana coach

Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates coach Owen Da Gama revealed he has rejected offers from various PSL clubs.

The 62-year-old has been without a club since leaving Sekhukhune United back in the 2021/22 season. Speaking to FARPost, Da Gama explained he’ll only listen to offers from Premier Soccer League(PSL) clubs with vision.

He also revealed he turned down offers from PSL and Motsepe Foundation Championship clubs, insisting he is no longer available for teams with no vision. The ex-Pirates mentor has over 20 years of experience in coaching and has coached Bafana on a few occasions.

Although he has been out of a job for two years now, the Mpumalanga-born coach says he is happy to wait.

“I spoke to a few teams at the beginning of the season, but once I understood their thinking, I just thought this is not the project I want to be part of,” Da Gama told FARPost.

“I am not a fly-by-night. But what I do believe is that you can make changes, but football is a process.

“When I look at those teams that I spoke to at the beginning of the season, they are all struggling. I knew that I could not be part of something like that,” he added.

“So there are very good teams that are well run professionally in the PSL and the NFD. Obviously, I am looking forward to being part of a professional set-up,” he said the former Pirates and TS Galaxy coach.

Da Gama has had success in the PSL, especially with Highlands Park. As Pirates coach, he only managed to put the club eight before he was sacked at the end of the 2007/08 season.
