Electric charger bid launched for “unkempt” land

Derelict land is to be transformed into an electric car charging station in Glasgow.

The plot in the Merrylee area would be home to four rapid chargers if approve by the council.

Zest Eco has applied for permission to install the equipment and associated infrastructure on the land beside 2A Fernleigh Road near a number of small businesses according to planning documents.

A statement submitted to Glasgow City Council on behalf of Zest Eco said: “The site is presently unkempt and vacant and is not contributing positively to the amenity of the area.

“The proposal to introduce EV charging would bring this vacant site back into beneficial “active use.”

The facility would have “a wider economic and environmental benefit that would be complimentary to the surrounding area,” according to the statement.

Drivers of all types of electric vehicles would be able to use the rapid 120W chargers, which would not be limited to a particular brand.

Cars could be plugged in 24 hours a day.

The statement added: “One of the greatest obstacles facing widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and e-mobility is a lack of reliable, easy to use, ultra-fast charging infrastructure.”

It continued: “This proposal seeks to assist in delivering new charging infrastructure to assist in the transition to electric vehicles.”

The application is being considered.

Research carried out on behalf of the council estimated 3,500 chargers will be needed in Glasgow by 2026. Up until December 2022, 334 charge points had been installed by the council.
