How much British viewers pay for Netflix compared with other countries

The price of Netflix has gone up in the UK recently, with the cost of basic service rising by £1 to £7.99 last October, the premium option increasing by £2 to £17.99, while the standard plan remained £10.99.

British viewers pay more for a standard Netflix subscription than those in Australia and Canada, despite the fact that both countries in 2024 have considerably higher average incomes per person.

UK customers are charged up to three times the price paid by households in Turkey and Argentina – but pay less than many European neighbours, including Spain, Germany and France.

While richer countries generally pay more for video streaming services, the cost is not as closely correlated with wealth as you might expect.

TV audiences in Britain pay less for their Netflix subscriptions than citizens of many low-income countries.

Residents of the small Pacific island Micronesia pay £12.27, for example, despite the country having a tiny economy.

Who pays the most?

The Swiss pay the most for their Netflix standard subscription, at £17.01 a month. This should be no surprise as it’s consistently ranked as one of the world’s richest countries.

A subscription is roughly £4 more expensive in the Alpine nation than in any other country.

Denmark and Greenland come in second and third place in the worldwide price ranking, paying £13.04 each.

Other wealthy European countries like Ireland pay £12.79, while France, Belgium and super-rich Monaco pay £11.52. Germany, Spain and Italy all pay £11.09.

Viewers in the US pay £12.28, while close neighbours in Canada pay £9.60 per month. Australians pay just £8.86, despite a healthy economy.

Who pays the least?

Pakistan pays the least for Netflix of any country in the world, just £2.23 a month.

However, due to censorship, Pakistanis have a significantly smaller selection of titles on offer than many other countries.

Turkish viewers pay the second lowest rate – the cheapest price in Europe – at £2.68. Argentinians come in third, paying £2.83 per month.

Not every country has the privilege of being able to watch streaming services such as Netflix in the first place. The service is banned outright in China and Russia.

Russia has been cracking down on foreign film and TV since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, though the country has various domestic streaming services offering Russian-language fare.
