This takes me right back to childhood playing in the sandbox, but this sandbox here at the Ontario Science Center is kind of special. With it, we can actually demonstrate what happens when a ton of rain hits a landscape and causes flash floods. Here in the sandbox, a flash flood is kind of fun, but in the real world, flash floods can be devastating, and we humans are making things worse. So much of our urban landscape is made out of concrete and asphalt. And none of that is very good at absorbing water. So when rain hits, none of it is absorbed. And that means flash floods. So when we make it rain in our little sandbox, you can see the water running off the hills and down into our miniature plains. Now imagine what happens to the water when you put a bunch of buildings in the way. If none of that water is absorbed, this building is going to be in serious trouble. Now we can mitigate the problem. By building on higher ground and constructing our urban landscapes out of more absorbent materials. Unfortunately, with a warming planet, flash flooding and urban flooding is only going to get worse.
