Here are places in the Philippines with the lowest heat indexes

Despite the tag-init or “summer” bringing health warnings with its punishing heat over the past few days, there are some areas whose heat indexes aren’t at dangerous levels.

Filipinos are urged to limit their outdoor exposure, particularly during the peak heat hours as scorching temperatures are over 40C in some parts of the country.

However, PAGASA’s heat index chart showed that three places are below the extreme caution levels based on the following stations’ reports on April 15 at 5 p.m. They are: Baguio, Benguet at 28C; Benguet State University, La Trinidad, Benguet at 25C; and Tanay, Rizal at 32C.

From April 16 to 17, Baguio and Tanay are expected to maintain their respective heat indexes, while La Trinidad is forecast to get a degree higher per day.

Forget the malls, now would be the perfect time to explore these “cool” places. If you’re planning to go to Baguio, here’s a list of underrated places to visit. There are also new cafes and restaurants that you must try when you’re there. Or if you’re a K-drama fan, make sure to check this list of Hallyu-inspired spots in Baguio that will remind you of South Korea.

On your next trip to Tanay, meanwhile, there are new cafes you may want to check to enjoy a cup of coffee while appreciating nature. You can even book these camping and glamping spots if you have time.

Heat index is the level of heat or discomfort a person experiences due to the air temperature and relative humidity, or the amount of moisture in the atmosphere accounting for that “nanlalagkit” feeling.

PAGASA has released a heat index classification threshold, adapted from the United States’ National Weather Service.

The Department of Health said the higher temperatures could put people at risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

PAGASA declared the start of tag-init last March 22.
