Hemant Soren Moves SC After Jharkhand High Court Rejects His Bail Plea In Money Laundering Case
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren moved the Supreme Court on Monday against the rejection of his bail plea by the Jharkhand High Court in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 31. He was sent to jail on February 15 after 13-day custody by the federal probe agency.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal moved a petition before Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud-led bench, seeking its urgent listing. The bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, said it would look into the request.
The Jharkhand High Court dismissed Soren’s writ petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and denied him bail on May 3. Soren claimed in his plea that his arrest was unwarranted and his remand in the matter was ‘arbitrary’ and ‘illegal’.
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister on Monday came out of the Ranchi jail to participate in his uncle’s funeral rites at Nemra Village in Ramgarh. Soren was seen in a different look as he donned a thick moustache and beard resembling his father Shibu Soren. He also sought the blessing of his parents after coming out of jail. The Jharkhand High Court had permitted him to participate in this program while in police custody. He will go back to Birsa Munda jail after attending the funeral rites of his uncle.
He has also been asked to refrain from talking to the media during his brief parole.
Soren’s wife said her husband’s arrest was illegal and has left the entire JMM family in shock. “We have full faith in the judiciary and we are waiting for Hemant to come out on bail and campaign for the Lok Sabha polls. He is innocent and has been trapped in a pre-planned conspiracy by the BJP-led government at the Centre,” news agency PTI quoted her as saying.
