Harry Kane surpasses Man Utd and Liverpool legends to set new Champions League record

Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot as Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Real Madrid in Tuesday’s thrilling Champions League semi-final first leg – and the striker set a new record for an Englishman in the process.
Vinicius Junior found the net against the run of play to put Madrid in front in the 24th minute in Munich, but Bayern rallied after the half-time break to drag themselves back into the contest and set up what promises to be an intriguing second leg.
Leroy Sane – who had earlier blazed a golden chance over the bar – levelled for the hosts in the 53th minute, cutting inside from the right flank and unleashing a devastating finish past Andriy Lunin.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were then handed the chance to take the lead just before the hour mark at the Allianz Arena as Lucas Vazquez clumsily stuck out a leg and brought down Jamal Musiala for a penalty.
England captain Kane held his nerve to convert from 12 yards, taking his incredible tally to 43 goals in 43 games for Bayern in all competitions in what has been a phenomenal debut season from an individual perspective.
The strike also saw Kane break the record for the most goal contributions (11) by an English player in a single Champions League campaign after eight goals and three assists in Europe’s premier competition this term – taking him beyond Steven Gerrard (10) and David Beckham (10).
Bayern appeared on course to take a narrow advantage to the Bernabeu in a week’s time but Madrid had other ideas, with Vinicius Junior scoring a spot-kick of his own in the 83rd minute after Rodrygo was fouled by Kim Min-jae.

Analysing the entertaining first leg in the TNT Sports studio, ex-Madrid and England striker Michael Owen claimed it was ‘never in doubt’ as Kane stepped up to take the penalty.
‘It’s never in doubt when he’s on the penalty spot. He’s a top player,’ Owen said.
‘He will be pleased to score in a Champions League final.’
Owen believes the tie is ‘really well poised’ ahead of the second leg after what he described as a ‘strange game’ in Munich.
‘I thought both penalties were pretty clumsy so it was one each really! It was a bit of a strange one because I thought Bayern dominated the first 20 minutes, we expected them to score and capitalise on that dominance and all of a sudden Real Madrid scored,’ he added.
‘The second half starts and you think Bayern are going to come right at them and they didn’t really. They scored a couple of goals from nothing and all of a sudden they were in control within ten minutes of the second half.
‘Madrid weren’t really pressing too hard and then they got a goal from a mistake from a penalty as well so it was a strange game, but entertaining all the same. It’s really well poised.’
