Hanif Omar served as the inspector-general of police for 20 years following his appointment to the post on June 8, 1974.
PETALING JAYA: Former inspector-general of police Hanif Omar has died at the age of 85.
In a brief statement, Abdul Rahmat Omar Hanif, said his father passed away at 2.15am this morning, Berita Harian reported.
“It is with great sadness that I, Abdul Rahmat Omar Mohamed Haniff, wish to announce the passing of my dearly beloved father at around 2.15am this morning,” he said.
Hanif Omar served as IGP for 20 years following his appointment to the post on June 8, 1974. He was 35 at the time.
Hanif, who was born in Teluk Intan, Perak, rose up the ranks in the police force at a young age, having been appointed Melaka police chief on Sept 7, 1970 and later, Selangor police chief on Dec 6, 1971.
On Feb 1, 1973 he was named deputy IGP.
