La Agencia Espacial Italiana (ASI) anunció hoy (12.02.2024) el descubrimiento de un micrometeorito formado por “materiales con una simetría imposible”, los llamados “cuasicristales”, lo que lo convierte en “uno de los más raros” hallados en la Tierra.

Se trata de un meteorito “extremadamente raro”, ya que contiene una “rarísima” aleación de aluminio y cobre así como ‘cuasicristales’, estructuras ordenadas pero no periódicas demostradas por el científico israelí Daniel Shechtman, Nobel de Química en 2011.

Este “extraño” y diminuto pedrusco extraterrestre, de 100 micrómetros, descrito en la revista Communications Earth & Enviroment, ha sido estudiado por un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Bari (sur), de Florencia (norte) y de la ASI.

‘Cuasicristales’ espontáneos

Se trata del tercer meteorito encontrado en la Tierra con este tipo de aleaciones metálicas y el segundo con ‘cuasicristales’ de origen natural, después del recuperado en 2011 en Khatyrka, en el extremo oriental ruso.

Este “extraordinario” meteorito redondeado fue encontrado en el monte Gariglione, en la región italiana de Calabria (sur), por un coleccionista que buscaba objetos en el campo y que se percató de la “extraña e inusual luminosidad metálica” del objeto.

Después, decidió enviárselo a los expertos de la Universidad de Bari para que lo estudiaran y que enseguida determinaron su procedencia espacial.

Los ‘cuasicristales’ son materiales en los que los átomos están dispuestos como en un mosaico en modelos regulares pero que nunca se repiten, al contrario de lo que ocurre con los cristales normales, y son muy preciados en varios sectores industriales.

“Esta investigación demuestra que existe un universo aún ignoto de fases minerológicas en nanoescala con materiales de origen extraterrestre que aún nos sorprende”, dijo la científica del Centro Espacial de Matera (sur) de la ASI, Paola Manzari.

El director del Departamento de Ciencias de la Tierra de la Universidad de Bari, Giuseppe Mastronuzzi, consideró que esta piedra también para la física y la química demuestra que los ‘cuasicristales’ pueden formarse “espontáneamente en la naturaleza”.
