Ci ha provato fino alla fine, Leclerc, a mettere i dubbio la pole di Verstappen: un time attck finale in apnea per il monegasco che non ha lasciato nulla sull’asfalto nel tentativo di fare xcambio di casella sulla prima fila con il rivale olandese. Niente da fare: Max ha siglato la pole, rimarcando a più riprese.La seconda metà dello schieramento di partenza “muove” dalla sesta fila formata da Lance Stroll con la Aston Martin (best of the rest, nel senso degli esclusi dal Q3)e dal francese Pierre Gasly con una Alpine quantomeno convalescente rispetto alle prime cinque esibizioni stagionali. Il suo connazionale e compagno di squadra Esteban Ocon apre la settima fila, completata da Alexander Albon con la Williams powered by Mercedes.

Dall’interno dell’ottava fila al via un Fernando Alonso fin qui decisamente sottotono tra le curve di Miami (anche rispetto al compagno di squadra Stroll), affiancato da Valtteri Bottas con la “migliore” delle Strike Sauber. Musi lunghi in nona e penultima fila: stiamo parlando del local boy Logan Sargeant (Williams) e di Daniel Ricciardo che con la VISA Cash App RB incredibilmente non ripete le sue performances del formato Sprint. Al via dalla decima e ultima fila il pluripenalizzato (sempre della Sprint di poche ore prima) Kevin Magnussen con la Haas Ferrari e il cinese Guanyu Zhou con la seconda Strike Sauber.

Non sfugge a Max Verstappen la pole position per il Gran Premio di Miami: un minuto, 27 secondi e 241 per l’olandese che – come per la Sprint – avrà al suo fianco in prima fila Charles Leclerc con la Ferrari. Prima fila “copia e incolla”, insomma. Il monegasco chiude a 141 millesimi da SuperMax. Seconda fila per l’altro ferrarista Carlos Sainz  che accusa un ritardo di 214 millesimi dalla Red Bull numero uno ma batte di cinque millesimi la “undici” di Sergio Perez. Terza fila full orange (anzi, papaya) per le due McLaren di Lando Norris (+0.353) e Oscar Piastri (+0.434) e quarta fila pure monocolore: in questo caso l’argento Mercedes: all’interno George Russell (+0.826), all’esterno Lewis Hamilton. , separati ra loro da quaranta millesimi di secondo. Un’occasione imperdibile di andare a caccia di punti importantissimi per Haas e VISA Cash App RB è quella che si sono meritati Nico Hulkenberg (+0.905) e Yuki Tsunoda (+0.951) che formano una quinta fila tutta… all’arrembaggio.
