Ginebra signs David Murrell; Magnolia activates Rome Dela Rosa
BARANGAY Ginebra officially picked up free agent David Murrell on Thursday in the first of what coach Tim Cone hopes would be a couple of transactions to strengthen the Gin Kings’ injury-plagued 2-3 positions.
The PBA announced the Ginebra transaction on its website on Thursday, two days after the five-day window for nine non-SMC ballclubs to pick up the Magnolia free agent forward lapsed.
Under league rules, free-agent transfers between sister team are only allowed if all the rival teams waive their signing rights.
To make room for Murrell, Ginebra relegated veteran guard Jared Dillinger to the unrestricted free agent with rights to salary (UFAWRS2RS) list.
However, Cone made it clear that the league’s most popular team will need more than just Murrell to plug holes in its wings left by the calf injury of Jamie Malonzo and longterm layoffs of Aljon Mariano and Jeremiah Gray.
On the other hand, Magnolia took a step closer to full fitness by activating Rome Dela Rosa, a regular starter before he was sidelined by an ankle injury suffered in the Hotshots’ Philippine Cup debut against Converge.
