German police seize rare Bugattis worth RM57 million in 1MDB-linked probe

German police have seized four rare Bugatti Veyron cars linked to the 1MDB scandal, German daily Bild reports..

The confiscated cars belong to an exclusive “Legends” series of Bugatti hypercars, of which only 18 were built.

The four vehicles are the Veyron editions Rembrandt, Black Bess, Jean-Pierre Wimille and Meo Constantini, each priced at around US$3 million (RM14.3 million).

The paper said the cars were seized by Criminal Investigation Department 7, which deals with white-collar crime, in an underground car park at Motorworld Munich, an automotive event venue in the city.

The report states that the seizure was in connection with investigations relating to 1MDB.

The 1MDB scandal involves personalities ranging from politicians and bankers to Hollywood stars and has led to criminal investigations in several countries.

The explosive revelation in 2015 that then prime minister Najib Razak had channelled over US$700 million from 1MDB into his personal bank accounts sent shockwaves through Malaysia and led to his ouster three years later.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted in connection with the SRC International case, a subsidiary of 1MDB.

He was charged with abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust over the transfer of RM42 million from SRC International to his personal accounts.

His sentence has since been halved to six years and his fine reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million by the Pardons Board.

A judicial review is currently underway into his claim that the former Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, had added an addendum to the Pardons Board’s decision requesting that Najib be allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
